how to keep water out of fuel when doing subs?

Discussion in 'Tech Discussion' started by gobbo-superjet, October 22, 2007.

  1. Every time i do subs i get water in my fuel lines and ski runs like a bag of shit.
Its got a we botle shape breather up the pole about 15cm and a water trap in the engine bay but it doesnt quite cut the mustard...
Is there any mods you can do to help this?

Thats a fairly odd fault? Do you still have the one way valve that acts as the breather for the fuel tank? Its usually quite close to that tank. It has a direction arrow on it and it needs to point into the tank

Its a tad wierd too that the water is making it into your lines so quickly? I would suggest removing the tank and draining it completely because you can sometimes get water in the tank that is hrad to see till you empty it out.

Finally, check the fuel filter and if need be, put another one in. They collect water also and will cause a few issues if they get a bit full.

I have a completely stock air intake and fuel tank breather system on my SJ and havent had any trouble with it so im thinking your trouble could be a build up of water somewhere.

Hey, are you sure it is water in fuel ?? ...i have similar problems sometime, but im thinking it more likely water in the electrics ....like water in plug boots or something

or it could be water going into the carb(s) or water soaking your airfilter (if your using one)

I had a problem thats was the same on my old SJ and it only did it when I was doing submersions. I could scream round the lakr good as gold but as soon as I went it under it would run like a dog.

I sold the ski with the fault still there and told the guy I thought it was elctrical even though I had replaced everything, I even replaced the ignition and charge coils.

Prior to that fault I had just done a complete top and bottom end and have sinced learned it could have been an air leak in the engine somewhere that was letting water in as well?

Just another avenue if you have had your ski apart recently?

Roger has a sealant he uses to join the cases etc and rekons its the only way to go. Even the good Loctite products arent good in skis.
  5. its got that 1 way valve your taling about and iv had the tank out cleaned it, carbs apart, new filter etc still does it. iv never had the engine apart wile iv had it wudnt surprise me if its never been apart. pritty sure its a water problem cos when it does it you can see water bubles in the fuel filter so i take it out and tap the water out it goes better but not 100% if ya hoon round for awile without doing subs it comes right slowly. iv tried puting meths in the tank aswell but that doesnt seem to do much.

Its just really strange that it gets to the engine so quickly? I cant believe it gets in so quickly and makes it to the carbs?

    Anyone else got any ideas?

I have had a couple of round nose superjets that just took in heaps of water when doing subs/nose stabs and there was nothing we could do about it, make sure you run a stock air filter and put in a scupper valve to get rid of the water quickly.

Also leave the plastic screw open on the bottom of that water separater, then the water drains out of it straight away and won't fill up with water.

you could tape up the front breather holes on the hood and have your fuel selector on the on position so it doesn't suck off the bottom. ive seen water in my tank when i pull it out but not noticed a change in performance, so im guessing you must have lots of water in your tank to get it in the lines.

When my neighbour and I rebuilt my engine, I couldn't get the case to seal with Three Bond (what Roger recommended)... Tony made up a leak test kit (blank plates for the intake and exhaust) and three attempts would never seal perfectly... Used Loctite 510 Flange Sealant and no problems 2/2 times... It takes longer to go off (24 hours) but it seems to work well! Its a bit more expensive than three bond tho..

But make sure its only 510 and no other grade!

With an air leak you may notice it free revving as well (possibly on the hose or when out of the water)...

As for the water I would say you need to empty the tank and let dry as recommended...
  13. yeah iv cleaned the tank out. and it doesnt free rev on the trailer so i dont think it has an air leak.. its running good at the moment so ill try a few of those things and do some subs and see what happens.

Maybe you are sucking in water through a rooted primer button. when the primer gets worn out air and water can be drawn past the rubber o ring inside it and end up in your carbs. It could let air or water go in to your fuel line too i guess?
