    Sup Y'all

I do a lot of lone riding and am starting to go big so thought that a helmet would probably be a good investment.

My question is; What sort to go for?

Is a full face motox or downhill mountain bike helmet really necessary if you're just mucking around and not racing?

I've found some reasonably priced wakeboarding helmets that could do?

    What do you guys wear?
  2. Its whatever you prefer, a lot of guys wear the basic wakeboarding ones. I wear a full face because it stops my teeth getting knocked out- it could happen pretty easily. If you do go full face try and get a carbon fibre one or a bicycle one as the motocross ones get pretty heavy. I have a carbon sixsixone and I would never wear anything else 8)

yea alot of us wear the Protec wake board helmets.

these have the flaps that cover your ears ...this protects you from bursting your ear drum if you have a messy landing.

This response pretty much said it all: carbon fibre, down-hill helmet.

MX helmets tend to absorb water and get heavy enough to push you under in bad going - not good if you've just knocked yourself silly.

Also, get yourself some jet-skiing mates. Riding alone just stacks the odds against you a whole lot more. A number of years ago, a rider in the Canberra crew knocked himself out in the surf at Bateman's Bay, and was face down for several minutes. Other riders where able to render assistance, but Sven never rode again.

As the saying goes " if you have a cheap head wear a cheap helmet" but if you want a bargin go to the sports section of trademe and under cycling is some good down hill helmets for not bad prices.

I wear a full face in the surf and wouldnt be without it! I just doing some surf riding in the weekend and ended up coming down upside down and had the ski land on my head. It dazed me for a second but had I not had my helmet id probably have been in some serious trouble. I wear a Oneal Titan which is a motorcross helmet but its ultra light and isnt too bad when its wet.
I would however recommend a downhill Mountain bike lid, much much lighter when they are wet.

As above-Full face down hill MTB helmet is the only way to go, they keep your teeth and brains in place and also drain water a lot better than a motorcycle helmet. I had my ski land on my head a few years back, lots of blood but only a few stitchs, makes you think when your out in the water. Look for something that doesn't restrict your vision but leave the peak on as it keeps the sun or splash out of your eyes. I am using a Sixsixone they make some great gear
