My starter motor does not engage at times? i have put in a new starter motor and gave the old bendix gear a good wash in solvents and re-oiled it how ever it still quite often does no engage the first time and you can just hear the starter motor spinning.

Does this mean a new Bendix gear is required? or is there some thing i can do to the old one?

yea i have same issue with mine at the moment .......however when I put my MSD total-loss flywheel on it doesnt have a problem........

my guess is that the bendix isnt throwing out fully , but the ring-gear on my MSD flywheel must be slightly further back which the bendix still manages to engage on easier.....

not really too sure tho ...just my guess......i dunno what would cause the bendix to not give full throw....

i had the same problem and found it to be worn ring gear on the flywheel...also bindex was worn a little but as soon as i put a new flywheel on it hasnt done it again.

Same issue with mine when I brushed the dust off on Friday for a weekend blast. Pulled the flywheel cover off only to find that the seal (SXR) had been pinched at the bottom and had let water in !! The bendix has got more rust on it than a nuns twat. Any ideas where I can get a cheap replacement?

Does the starter sound like it is spinning? If it's not spinning its either the starter or a problem with the relay solenoid or wiring.

Pull the starter and connect it straight to a battery outside of the ski. If the starter spins its fine. You can also stick your finger through the starter hole and flick the bendix by hand and feel if its extending.

Is the new bendix OEM or aftermarket? I've heard of the aftermarket ones failing pretty quickly.

It can't be engaging the flywheel correctly.

Take the cover off and check clearance between the flywheel ring gear and the starter clutch teeth. It must either be worn ring gear allready on the flywheel,or not spaced correctly.

Have you tried your stock flywheel back on it to check ?

it did the same thing with the old fly wheel and old bendix so thats why im thinking it must be the starter or leads

Same problem with mine recently. Found the bendix to be a cheap aftermarket part and the clutch assembly had fallen apart and wasn't throwing out the gear to engage to flywheel to turn engine over .... since replacing with OEM (genuine part) no more starting issues :) .... AVOID ebay cheap crap

Ive got some genuine yamaha bendixs here. West Harbour that is. Dont use a cheap one or continue to use one thats playing up. I had to replace all my electrics in the stator at over $800 as the bendix came to bits and went through everything. It doesnt take much.
