I'm trying to get better turning for a 09 SJ. So far i've been told to change to an older cable (96-07) as it has more travel. Has anyone else done this and is it noticably better? what else needs to be done, do i have to do a turn plate/steering system? Is there any mods to do at the nozzle end?
the easiest way to get a bit more without changing any parts is to move the connection on the nozzle closer to the pivot. http://www.x-h2o.com/showthread.php?580 ... mod-how-to. The pre-08 cable does have more throw, but the mounting point on the pole is further back....so you need to change poles........then you have enough throw in the cable to utilise the outer holes on a Quick-turn turn plate ...like UMI, blowsion etc etc Awhile back i did see someone making adapters for a pre-08 cable onto an 08+ pole
Cheers for that Knoxie, you must be better at searching X-H2O than me, I spent ages trying to find that sort of thing! So far i've modified the nozzle and have ordered a cable, will make up a bracket to mount it then modify the turn plate, if that doesnt work guess i'll have to order a Blowsion one. Will post pics as I go.
I've finally finished all the steering mods, took it for a ride the other day, and it rides like a completely different ski! Nose stabs without a problem and turns on a dime. theres more adjustment in my cable and the plate but I really dont think i need it. Heres some pics and details of what I did, Hopefully someone else finds them useful. Ground off the gussets on the nozzle and drilled a 6mm hole in as close as possible. Mounted the cable end swivel into the new hole with small washer top and large washer bottom, nyloc nut on top and had to put another nut underneath to space the cable down so it doesn't hit the pump. Modified the stock Turn Plate. Really only need the 4th hole. Fitted a new pre 08 Steering cable, had to drill and grind a small bit out of the Alloy pole top bracket. Made up a s/s bracket to secure the new cable. It uses the stock mounting bracket bolt hole. Fiddly as to get it in there. Had to grind a bit out of 1 side and the top of the plastic steering nozzle to get full throw. The stock chin pad still fits after some severe grinding of the plastic. I got a Fibreglass one off Sox which has heaps more clearance. I would recommend this to anyone with a 08 or newer SJ as one of their first mods. I've just got to learn to control the thing now it handles so different!
I am just about to do this to my ski wondering what the dimensions of the bracket are and how much the glass chinpad was cheers
heres some pics with dimensions. Make it out of 2.5mm or 3mm stainless, my original one wasn't quite strong enough. The stock chinpad works sweet and you will have less issues with it. I'm in the process of making a new glass/carbon one now.
So ive gone about this mod slightly different. Ive used Knoxi turn plate second hole out and have allso done the same to the nozzel as you have done but useing the stock steering cable. Safely i now have 128mm from pump end to inside edge of nozzel measuring the same as sj manual suggests. Im interested to no what you have ended up with? As im considering getting the pre 08 cable if it were to help even more what i have done so far is a noticeable difference from stock. Prety new to all this so help appreciated cheers..
from memory pre 08 cable has about 15mm more travel than 08 + will measure taynes race boat in the morning and confirm what you have done is better than you had but still a bit off what you can achieve
Cheers T Bear that be good thanks.. Just got a bit freaked out on the idea that i needed to get another bracket made to take the pre 08 cable to get it to work right as it mite be too long for my set up.
