I ride a stock 05 SJ both on the lake and in the surf. In the lake I never have any problems and runs real well. But after a couple of rides in the surf I loose top end power. I assume this is cos I fall off alot more and get water everywhere. Changing spark plugs seems to fix this as a short term solution and get me riding again. I have blocked off front air intakes to reduce water in the hull and also have stripped down and cleaned Carbs but it still keeps doing this. Am I heading down the right path, is water in the Carbs causing this? Is this common? What would you reccomend to solve this?

    Cheers

got a bilge pump and coupler cover? (captures the water splashed around by the couplers and prevents it going into the carbs)

you may find its an electrical issue, coil shorting out or something

did you find water in the carbs when you pulled them apart?

    Bilge pump - Yes
Coupler cover - No (didn't know about them)
    Stock air box - Yes

When pulled apart carbs found alot of water around screens and top plate.
Found only small traces of water in Carbs. There always seems to be a bit of water/moisture around screens / top plate after a ride, even when it is running good.

First thing, get a cover. They make a huge difference. You can get a new one from ajsp for about $25 i think.

If you found water in your carbs, drain the fuel tank and throw a clean rag in there too soak everything up. Let it dry and put some new fuel in.
