It's been a long time since freestyle competitions were competed for at North and South Island rounds, let alone the nationals. Who would front up if it was offered?

I would front up if there was a beginner class :)

I think the sport is still in early days yet. Maybe in a few years it might take off.

But hey thats just my 2c.

I do tend to agree with Rick, althought there is a fairly good following in NZ im not sure that we are at a competitive level. Dont get me wrong there are some riders on this site that could rip it up and foot it with the best of them but there isnt likely to be much competition for the guys that are good.

I think in a year or so there will be a larger number of highly skilled freestylers that would be keen to hammer it out in a comp!

OK guys we all know that free riding is pretty sweet, but the fact that it gets made competitive goes against everything that it's about. Back in the day I did a few freestyle competitions and it's all about getting technical about how you ride your ski, which can only but improve your surf skills. My favourite trick in the surf was a bulldog off the lip which can only be learnt by first learning to move over your ski on the flat. I would love to see pro/am classes started up again and guys just having a go and learning off each other.

    Whats the bulldog?

Im itching to get out into the surf but still love the flat water eh! a comp would be wicked! gotta learn those setup wakes :p

Bulldog is a 180 rotation with the rider effectivly remaining in the same spot but landing on the nose of the ski. Basically if you have your left hand reaching across to the right hand, hand hold then you do a s shaped approach clamp the throttle and turn the bars to create the flat rotation. As the ski moves under you drop your right leg down as so the ski will hit the inside of your leg and then sit down on the nose, regain your balance and power out and start to ride backwards. The surf technique is exactly the same except there is less set up needed, more air and more potential for cracking your nuts.

Do ya begin by standing in the tray or kneeling and leaning over the hood? Sounds pretty nuts either way!
  14. Sounds interesting. We have been talking about doing some free ride surf comps @ Dalusion or even the possiblity of building a ramp. We will get there...Magpie>>>

Start with one leg in the centre of the tray with the pole hard down on the hood and the left leg out to the left side for counter balance.

I've attempted something very similar, flat water, but when I try it it ends up as a pants fountain and filling the engine bay with water!
