Could of got yay one for cost if was in NZ... ;) like aqua said go to JB and just offer them a stupidly low price and negotiate from there. www.pricespy.co.nz would give you a good indication for pricing. go for some thing with an I3,5,7 CPU they will get the job done nicely. BTW stay away from dell, there build quality has gone down over the last couple of years. HP are making very solid laptops ATM

I wasn't going to say much as most stuff you get these days is pretty good so its hard to go wrong, BUT HP stuff is shit. Just last year we had about a 50% failure rate in the HP range. Avoid HP/Compaq.
In my experience the Dell stuff is good and cheap, and if it does fuck out they will send someone onsite to fix it. You will have to talk to someone in Bangladesh, but it will get sorted.
As for ACER, if it dies...and it probably will then getting it fixed is a right pain in the arse.
PB tech are a good place to go though.
I'd recommend Lenovo (which are IBM), Dell and Toshiba. There are other less known brands like ASUS which are good bang for buck too.

Bring on summer, gotta be rough when the talk here turns to geek.

    Yep, stay away from HP/Compaq....

they are cheap Compaqs with HP stickers on them...

At my lat job we went from HP -> Toshiba -> Dell and found in the end that Dell was lasting the best of them all.

And as for JBhifi i rang them and asked about the acer $600 deal and the guy said No way dude stay away from that one...He reconds he only sells them to retarded sales reps that think they are getting a good deal lol.

Im off to the warehouse to hook me up some transonic!

Mate, if you want cheap and reliable then go this - its basic, but will do what you want sweet as. Its about as cheap a deal you will get for a half decent PC: http://pbtech.co.nz/index.php?item=NBKLEN5835

Otherwise, get an entry level dell from the dell web site.

Buying an Acer is a gamble, a good chance it will bite you.
